Medical Terminology with ESL Support
This class is designed for English language learners as a stepping stone into a healthcare pathway. Students are supported in language learning  while learning to recognize word roots, prefixes, and suffixes used in medical language. Learn how to combine words to create meaningful medical conditions, comprehend their definition, and know the correct spelling. Emphasis is on medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, communication, medical ethics, and legality.
 
This class meets the prerequisites for the Medical Assistant Back Office class.

Bio:

A graduate of SVAE’s Adult Medical Assisting program in 2008, Luz Gamboa brings extensive healthcare and teaching experience to the classroom. After completing her training, she worked as a caregiver before spending 13 years at Samaritan Urgent Care, where she strengthened her skills in patient care and medical assisting. Alongside her healthcare career, Gamboa supported students as a teaching assistant and Medical Assisting Lab Technician at De Anza College and SVAE. She also teaches Medical Assisting to high school learners at SVCTE. Today, Gamboa draws on her experience as a caregiver, medical assistant, and educator to prepare students for success in healthcare and beyond. She is passionate about providing the guidance and encouragement she wished she had early in her own career journey, helping students build confidence, develop professional skills, and recognize that their goals are within reach through hard work and determination.
 

Why do you teach Career and Technical Education?

When I was my students' age, I didn’t have a mentor or teacher to guide me in my career. It’s incredibly rewarding when students return and share that my class inspired their career path. I also love supporting them through letters of recommendation, which have positively impacted their college acceptances.
